Shelby E. Broberg

Director

Shelby Broberg is the Communication Center Director and an Instructor at George Mason University. Shelby has a B.A. in Communication and earned her M.A. in Communication Studies from Arizona State University where she worked as a graduate student in their communication center, CommLabASU. During her first year as an Instructor, she also served as the Assistant Director of Community Outreach for CommLabASU, initiating and maintaining partnerships between the communication center and community partners including Boys & Girls Club of America, Girl Scouts, and the Be a Leader Foundation. After her time at ASU, Shelby moved to Western Carolina University where she was an Instructor for three years.

As an Instructor, Shelby has taught classes including Public Speaking, Relational Communication, Small Group, and Conflict & Negotiation, among others. 

A few of Shelby's current research projects include the effects of virtual reality interventions on public and personal communication; improving training for tutors working with multilingual speakers; and the effectiveness of outreach methods to encourage students to utilize campus learning support.

Sachita Pandey

Sachita is a graduate student doing her M.A. in Communication with a concentration in Strategic Communication and Public Relations. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies from Kathmandu University in Nepal. She has experience working in development aid projects related to health and nutrition as well as branding and marketing for private corporate organization as well. 

At the GMU Communication Center, her role focuses on the outreach and marketing of the center. Her academic and research interest lie in public affairs/relations, diplomacy and health interventions. 

Sachita enjoys taking care of her plants, exploring new places, hiking, swimming and similar relaxing outdoor activities. 

Mariam Shafik

Mariam Shafik is a graduate student at George Mason University majoring in Communication with a concentration in Intercultural Communication. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from George Mason University in Interpersonal/Organizational Communication. She has conducted undergraduate research within the field of Intercultural Communication and aims to earn her Ph.D. so that she may become a professor in the field of communication.  


Mariam served as the Vice President of George Mason University’s Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America in her senior year of college. She was also an Ambassador for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), and for the Communication Department at George Mason University. 


In her free time, Mariam runs her own baking business, Mariam’s Home Bakery, which she started in 2020.

 

Jane Holloman

Jane is a first year Communication Master's student commuting from Washington, DC. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from Eckerd College in St Petersburg, Florida. Before joining the Communication Center team, Jane worked as a survey research specialist at RTI International. Her role in the Communication Center is focused on research and data analysis. Her other research interests include public understanding of science, risk communication, and climate change communication. 

Jane enjoys reading, hiking, camping, and pretty much any other outdoor activity in her spare time. She hopes to one day visit all of the U.S. National Parks.
